Equal Opportunities Policy
SIM Building Group recognises the dignity and worth of every individual and promotes equality of opportunity for all.

1. SIM Building Group supports equality of opportunity and is committed to oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination on grounds of gender, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, employment status, religion, age, trade union activity and responsibility for dependants.

2. SIM Building Group will recruit, develop and retain all staff on an equal basis. All individuals will be treated fairly and equitably and decisions on recruitment, selection, training, promotion and career management will be based solely on individual ability, effective performance and the needs of the Company.

3. As an organisation, the Company will fulfil the provisions and requirements of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (as amended) and the Race Relations Act 1976 (as amended), which make it unlawful for an organisation to discriminate directly or indirectly on grounds of gender or race; the Equal Pay Act (1970); the Discrimination Act 1995 and the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 which relates to the employment of disabled people and recruiting regardless of age; and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) (Exception) Order 1975 which makes it unlawful for an organisation to discriminate on grounds of a 'spent conviction' in the recruitment of rehabilitated persons.

4. The success of this policy in ensuring that all are treated on an equal basis is dependent upon securing the co-operation and support of everyone at all levels in SIM Building Group.

5. Sexual Equality It is the policy of SIM Building Group to ensure that sex discrimination does not occur and, in accordance with the Sex Discrimination Act, to promote equality of opportunity between males and females within the Company and those applying to join the Company.

6. Racial Equality It is the policy of SIM Building Group to ensure that race discrimination does not occur and, in accordance with the Race Relations Act, to promote equality of opportunity for all. Where individuals have particular cultural and religious needs which may require a modification to existing requirements, the Company, where practicable, will endeavour to accommodate these needs, within the constraints of operational requirements. Each situation and request will be treated individually.

7. Disabled Persons It is the policy of SIM Building Group to ensure that discrimination does not occur on grounds of disability. The Company recognises that it is unlawful in terms of the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 for an employer to discriminate against a disabled person. Access will therefore be based on skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. However, where appropriate, the Company undertakes to support wherever possible, to provide the necessary assistance to ensure that people with disabilities are treated fairly, in all aspects of Company practices. Wherever possible, the Company will provide opportunities and training for disabled people, including those who become disabled, in order to make the best possible use of skills and potential.

8. Ageism It is the policy of SIM Building Group to ensure that discrimination does not occur in terms of age. The Company recognises that it is unlawful in terms of the provisions of the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 for an employer to discriminate against a person due to their age. Access will therefore be based on skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. However, where appropriate, the Company will ensure, wherever possible, to provide the necessary assistance to ensure that people are treated fairly, in all aspects of Company practices. Wherever possible, the Company will provide opportunities, training, and career progression.

9.  New and Expectant Mothers When given has given birth within the previous six months or is breastfeeding, SIM Building Group will conduct a specific risk assessment, which takes into account any advice provided by the woman's GP or Midwife on her health. If the risk cannot be removed SIM Building Group will adjust her working conditions and/or hours of work; or if that is not possible offer her suitable alternative work (at the same rate of pay) if available; or if that is not feasible suspend her from work on paid leave for as long as necessary to protect her health and safety and that of her child. SIM Building Group will,  where a new or expectant mother works nights and provides a medical certificate from her GP or Midwife which says that working nights will affect the health of the woman, suspend her from work, on full pay, for as long as necessary. However, the provides that where appropriate, suitable alternative work should be offered, on the same terms and conditions, before any suspension from work.
